The United States Navy has announced plans to enter into a direct contract with Boeing to update the support software of the Harpoon missile.

The initiative is part of the CMBRE program and aims to keep the weapon’s operational capability aligned with new combat requirements following the completion of Harpoon Block II testing.

The modernization focuses on the system responsible for testing, configuring, and reprogramming guided munitions, considered essential for the functioning and preparation of missiles prior to missions. According to the Navy, Boeing was selected as the only company with access to the technical data and capabilities required to carry out the update within the established timeline.

Although the process is being conducted as a direct award, the U.S. government stated that other companies may still submit proposals. However, the final decision on whether to open a competitive process remains fully under the control of military authorities.

The update follows a successful testing campaign of the Harpoon Block II Update, which included three distinct evaluations. The trials validated the missile’s performance across different scenarios, including attacks against moving maritime targets and land-based targets, reinforcing the expansion of its role on the modern battlefield.
